‘Overnight success’ Brendan for Monroe’s show

Brendan McCahey, a new name to the Irish music scene since winning RTÉ’s The Voice of Ireland last year, will play Monroe’s Live on Sunday, April 26.

Brendan McCahey might seem like an overnight success, but he has been in the business for over 20 years, playing covers and his own material at venues countrywide. On the RTÉ show, he delivered an eclectic selection of classics from performers including David Bowie, Roy Orbison, Sam Smyth and Bo Diddley to show his ability and versatility.

Musically, Brendan lists Buddy Holly, Scott Walker, Jimmie Rodgers and David Bowie as influences and their inspiration can be heard on his two his self-financed solo albums, which were released before his success on The Voice of Ireland.

The second of those albums, Expectations, spawned a slew of singles, one of which, Safe and Well, impressed the producers of the NBC show Jimmy Lloyd Songwriter Showcase. They invited Brendan to New York to perform the song on the show in September 2012.

Since winning The Voice of Ireland, his version of the song, You Can’t Judge a Book, has reached number three in the Irish iTunes chart.

In his career, Brendan has shared stages and played support to Paul Heaton, Jerry Fish, Boz Boorer (Morrissey), The 4 Of Us, The Frank and Walters and David Kitt.

Doors for his Monroe’s show are at 8pm, tickets €15/€12.50 online.
