OVER ONE THOUSAND REFERRALS TO GALWAY GARDA JUVENILE DIVERSION PROGRAMME

There were over one thousand referrals to the Garda Juvenille Diversion Programme in the Galway region in 2011.

The programme’s Annual Report show that over 27 thousand such referrals were made nationally, a slight increase of 0.5% when compared with 2010.

The Diversion Programme is a statutory option provided for under the Children Act 2001 to address the offending behaviour of children between the age of 10 and 18 years.

Of the 1,069 Galway referrals, 255 were deemed formal and 477 were categorised as informal.

Galway had the highest number of such referrals in the Western region.
