Outdoor cinema returns
Date Published: 05-Jul-2007
A jam packed six days lies in store for this year’s Galway Film Fleadh, which will feature eight world, 10 European and endless Irish premieres during the 19th running of the festival.
Hollywood stars like actor Jeremy Irons and screenwriters Terry George and Volker Schloendorff are expected to descend on the city next week, as well as our very own Fionnula Flanagan, for the
festival.
On of its founders, Miriam Allen, describes this year’s list of special guests as “a real coup” and is especially looking forward to Terry George’s visit: “He’s been here twice before and really enjoyed it. We’re delighted”. Aidan Quinn will also pay a visit as well as a surprise guest on the Sunday; “fingers, eyes and legs crossed” exclaims Allen.
The free open air screenings will make their welcomereturn to Eyre Square this July also with films like When Harry met Sally, Brief Encounter, Calamity Jane, Oklahoma, ‘Bugsy Malone’ and the screening of spooky movie Carrie on Friday July 13 at 10.30pm. “All of the afternoon screenings are family orientated and people bring cushions, popcorn and watch the films in the sunshine — it doesn’t get much better than that,” says Allen.
With 120 short films and 90 feature films due to be screened from 9.30am until midnight every day for six days, Allen admits it will be “action packed” but the film buff would not be happy if it was anything but.
