OUGHTERARD WOMAN WINS SUPREME COURT APPEAL TO SUE OVER HYSTERECTOMY

An Oughterard woman has been granted permission to sue a G.P and the Health Service Executive after she had a radical hysterectomy due to a mistaken suspision she had cervical cancer.

The Supreme Court has ruled that Julia Schuit of Oakfield, Oughterard is entitled to sue the GP and the HSE over alleged failure to act on the results of several smear tests carried out on her showing abnormalities over years.

She underwent a hysterectomy at University Hospital Galway in 1996 when she was 38 years old.
