ON a remarkable weekend for Galway schools football, there were stories to inspire schools of every type. For the aristocrats, there was St. Jarlath’s breaking their longest ever losing streak in the A final, while those who believe in sporting ecumenism would have taken great joy in St. Joseph’s of Garbally – traditionally a rugby school and still involved in B hurling championship – winning the equivalent football title.

Then, for the romantics, there was the fairytale win for the little guy – St. Paul’s of Oughterard, who came through extra-time to eventually edge out Balla Secondary School of Mayo to secure provincial C glory.

“I think everyone who came here today definitely got their money’s worth, schools football is fantastic” is how a breathless Diarmuid Ó Laoí summed up an incredible 80 minutes of action for his St. Paul’s players at the Connacht Centre of Excellence on Saturday.

“The amount of Galway schools in particular that are in the finals at the moment, it’s fantastic for all of Galway and it’s brilliant for the three clubs, Oughterard, Killannin and Clonbur. When you see schools football, that’s a huge showcase for all the work that’s been put in underage throughout the years by numerous coaches”.

Coaches work hard to prepare their players to put their best foot forward at all times, but sometimes it’s all about the ability to adapt, and with a ferociously strong wind blowing down the ground, favouring St. Paul’s in the first half, the West Galway side needed to hit the ground running, and they did.
