OUGHTERARD Boxing Club hosted an International Tournament between Ireland and England last Saturday night in the local Community Centre.

The standard of both teams was high as they featured boxers who had competed in the European Championships in Russia in September. All those in attendance were treated to great boxing throughout, with 12 bouts in total.

Oughterard Boxing Club had four boxers on the team and there was huge local interest with the event being totally sold out. First fight of the night featured Cillian Tierney from Oughterard against Kieran Demond at boy 2 36 kg.

This was an International debut for Tierney and he fought impressively. Demond had a height advantage and the Oughterard boxer had to work hard to get his scores. There was nothing between them going into the last round. Despite an impressive performance from the local boxer, Demond came out on top.

The next boxer up for Oughterard was Matthew Tierney who was also making his international debut against Tommy Lee Casey. Matthew settled into the fight straight away and showed some great foot work and fast hands. He performed well and led all the way.

But all credit to Casey as he tried several times throughout the bout to stop the attacks of Tierney and came at him with good strong rallies of his own. The Oughterard boxer came out the deserving winner in the end.

One of the most anticipated bouts of the night was between Kieran Molloy of Oughterard against Freddy Young as both boxers had won bronze medals in the European championships at the boy 4 56kg category.
