Oranmore researchers say fish farming not harming salmon stocks
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Researchers at the Marine Institute in Oranmore have found that pollution rather than fish farming is having the greatest effect on wild salmon stocks here.
A paper, led by reseachers at the Institute, says there’s no evidence of any negative impact of aquaculture on wild salmon stocks.
The research paper states that river catchments with salmon cages close to estuaries are performing ‘best’ in terms of salmon conservation limits.
The findings have been published in the international Agricultural Sciences scientific journal.
A controversial plan for a 15 thousand-tonne organic salmon farm, proposed for Galway Bay is still before the Marine Minister, Simon Coveney.
