TEAM captain Damien O’Reilly struck 4-4 as Oranmore/Maree were crowned the 2020 Junior B county hurling champions as a strong start and conclusion to this game handed them the victory at Kenny Park on Sunday.

The first and last scores of this keenly contested encounter came from the stick of O’Reilly with both of those efforts rattling the back of the Beagh net. In a physical battle played in far from ideal hurling conditions, Beagh only struck three points from play as they struggled to breakdown a resolute Oranmore/Maree rearguard.

The difference in the end was O’Reilly’s quality in front of goals as he buried each of his four goal chances. Beagh showed admirable battling qualities as they trailed throughout. but they were simply beaten by a team with an eye for goal.

Oranmore/Maree won the Junior B county football title in 2019 and they have now added the hurling equivalent to their trophy cabinet. The victors raced out of the blocks as Stephen Commins declined a point opportunity instead finding O’Reilly 20 metres from goal. The corner forward’s rasping effort flew past Richard Joyce in the Beagh goal as Oranmore/Maree found the net inside the opening 50 seconds.

O’Reilly added another free moments later as Oranmore/Maree looked the sharper outfit. This may be explained by the fact Shane Lyons’ side played their county semifinal two weeks ago, while Beagh’s semi final took place last October.

Beagh got off the mark through a fine Kieran Diviney point before Brian Diviney notched a free. A familiar combination then helped Oranmore/Maree strike their second goal with Stephen Commins’ shot dropping short with O’Reilly reacting quickest to gather possession before contributing his second major of the game.
