An Oral hearing has heard that safety, economy, environment, accessibility and integration are the main factors highlighting the need for road improvement measures on a dangerous stretch of the N17.

The hearing for landowners affected by a compulsory purchase acquisition to improve road safety along the Carrownurlaur Bends continues this lunchtime at the Ard Ri Hotel in Tuam.

Opening the hearing this morning, Derek Daly appointed by An Bord Pleanala said five written submissions have been received objecting to the plans.

Galway County Council then presented its submission to acquire the land for the Carrownurlaur Bends scheme.

Providing evidence, Chartered Engineer and Project Manager for the proposed scheme Eamon Daly said the scheme has an estimated cost of 3.65 million euro.

The hearing continues this afternoon where evidence will be provided by some of the landowners affected by the plans.
