Galway Bay fm newsroom – The number of patients on trollies awaiting treatment at the emergency department in UHG this week is not due to capacity problems but to an increase in demand.

That’s according to Tony Canavan, the Chief Operating Officer of the hospital group who says all efforts are being made to reduce the numbers waiting.

A number of elective procedures have also been postponed this week to cope with the demand.

28 patients are waiting on trollies at UHG today.

21 beds have been opened in the hospital to free up capacity with 13 of these in the surgical day ward.

Speaking on Galway Talks, Mr. Canavan says all beds that can be opened have been opened.
