Only two passengers a day using Co Galway rail station
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Only two passengers a day are using one rural Co Galway railway station according to a new report.
Attymon is one of 31 railway stations which are now subject to a “full review” by Irish Rail according to a report in today’s Sunday Independent.
Internal briefing documents from the Department of Transport also show that passenger numbers on the €110 million Euro Western Rail Corridor from Galway to Limerick, which opened in 2010 have been dissapointing to date.
The Galway-Limerick route is one of a number of rural railway lines that could face a cut in services.
The report states that there is also concern that many passenger journeys on under-used lines are made by passengers in receipt of the free travel pass, meaning that Irish Rail receives no revenue from the trips.
A spokesperson for the firm said that in light of the “grave financial situation facing the company” a full review of routes and services is currently underway.
Irish Rail has accumulated losses since 2008 of €147 million Euro.
