One-man show marks Dubliners anniversary

The Dubliners Dilemma, a production based on the 1914 short-story collection by James Joyce, will be staged at the Town Hall Theatre on Wednesday, April 2, at 8pm.

The show, adapted and performed by Declan Gorman and directed by Gerard Lee is from Dublin based Bachelors Walk Productions.

The one-man drama is set in the year when Dubliners was first published and sees London publisher Grant Richards re-reading Joyce’s manuscript, eight years after rejecting it over fears it might breach obscenity laws.

As the streets of Dublin and the racy stories of Joyce’s childhood and young adult world spring to life, Richards relives his frustrating correspondence with the Irish writer. He wonders if he should risk everything second time around and launch this brilliant but difficult author on the world.

Declan Gorman’s performance in this show, which marks the centenary of the issue of Joyce’s first prose collections, Dubliners, has been described by The Irish Times as ‘compelling’. His performance is accompanied by an evocative audio-visual presentation, The Life of Joyce.

• Tickets for The Dubliners Dilemma, on Wednesday, April 2, are €15 and available from tht.ie, 091-569777 and from the venue.
