Athenry man Paul Hession is out of this summer’s Olympics after finishing fifth in the men’s 200 metres semi-finals in Beijing this afternoon.

The 25 year-old sprinter from Ballydavid, had a time of 20.38 seconds.

Neighbours, friends and colleagues of Paul, gathered to watch the race in his local pub, Dan’s in Athenry this afternoon, and in the Huntsman Inn in the city.

While he didn’t manage to qualify for the final, his supporters said the NUIG medical student has done Athenry, Galway and Ireland proud.
