OIREACHTAS COMMITTE ADOPTS WEST REGENERATION REPORT

The Oireachtas Committee on Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs has adopted the latest report on regenerating the West

Recommendations to tackle social and economic equality in Galway and the West are outlined in the report called “Awakening the West”

It highlights depopulation, a lack of Foreign investment, hospital closures, and minimal job creation as just some of the major issues affecting counties Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon, Leitrim and Donegal.

Recommendations include a single Government Department that would have responsibility for regional development, and defined targets set out for Business Support Agencies.

The report also recommends that a charter of rights, based on the needs of Islanders, would be guaranteed in law.
