Ode to Joy as RTÉ orchestra returns to Galway

After an absence of over three years, the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra will return to Leisureland, Galway in October.

The visit, which has been made possible thanks to sponsorship by software company SAP, will see the orchestra joined by German cellist Daniel Müller-Schott for a performance of Dvorak’s beloved Cello Concerto, a work with which Daniel triumphed earlier this year with the Berlin Philharmonic. Daniel ranks amongst the foremost cellists of his generation and can be heard on the world’s top concert stages.

The orchestra, under principal conductor Alan Buribayev, will also perform music by Brahms and Strauss.

The orchestra last visited Leisureland in March 2011 as part of Music for Galway’s season. Back then Finghin Collins, who was Associate Artist with the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra, directed a programme of Mozart concertos from the piano. Now he is Music for Galway’s Artistic Director and, in that role, he is delighted to announced the NSO’s return.

“We could not have wished for a more fitting programme as we bring back the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra,” says Finghin. “Our coming season will be focusing on the cello and we are thrilled that the RTÉ NSO has secured such a stellar artist. This performance will give us the opportunity to showcase this gorgeous instrument as the star with a symphony orchestra.”

Managing director with SAP Ireland, Liam Ryan, says “SAP is delighted to be associated with the return of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra to Galway”.

The concert, which will be staged in Leisureland, Salthill, on Thursday, October 9 at 8pm, will be repeated at the National Concert Hall in Dublin the following night as part of the RTÉ NSO 2014-15 Season.

Tickets for the concert in Leisureland cost €22.50. Concessions are €18 for fulltime students and and €10 for school-going children. For a limited period, four full-priced tickets can be booked together for €80. They are available from Music for Galway 091 705962, Opus 2, High Street, Galway City, or www.tht.ie
