Ocean Race organisers are ordered to pay debt
A decree has been made against the organisation behind the 2012 Volvo Ocean Race grand finale, in favour of an international insurance firm that has been seeking payment for over a year, at Galway District Court.
Liberty Mutual Direct Insurance Company Ltd, with registered offices at Dublin Road, Cavan, had sought to recover €2,500 from Let’s Do It Galway Ltd, with registered offices at Galway Harbour Enterprise Park. They also sought costs of €117.32, plus interest.
The amount was in respect of a policy premium agreed between the parties.
The civil summons stated: “Despite repeated written and oral demands, calling upon the defendant to discharge the outstanding bill, including letters dated February 11 and January 23 2013, the defendant has failed, refused, or neglected to discharge the bill.”
On May 30 last year, the court was told that the matter had been “substantially settled” but that there were still a few matters outstanding. An application was made to adjourned the case generally, with liberty to re-enter in the event of settlement breaking down.
Solicitor for the defendant, Pat Sheehan, had said that the matter would not likely bother the court again.
However, yesterday, solicitor for Liberty Insurance, Edward Molloy, sought a decree for €2,500 to be made against Let’s Do It Galway.
He had also sought expenses, advising the court that the defendants had issued a notice to defend, but then decided not to proceed.
Judge Mary Fahy acceded to the request, granting costs in the intermediate scale.
Another civil matter, also naming Let’s Do It Galway as a defendant, was adjourned to a future date. This application was brought by Rentokil Initial Ltd., trading as Rentokil Pest Control, with registered offices at Hazel House, Millennium Park, Naas, Co Kildare.
The plaintiff has sought to recover €1,989.06 “in respect of work done and services rendered by the plaintiff for the defendant at the request of the defendant within the past six years.”
