O’ Shea set to stay for 2009

STAR midfielder Jay O’Shea has been rewarded for his performances in the Galway United jersey last season by being handed the captain’s armband for the 2009 season, which gets underway on Friday week with a game against St Patrick’s Athletic in Richmond Park, Dublin.
O’Shea, whose move to Derby County fell through at the last minute last month, is in the second of a two years contract with United, and while both Derry City and Dundalk are believed to have made enquiries about the U-23 international, he is staying at Terryland and will lead the side in the new campaign.
The news was confirmed to Sentinel Sport yesterday by United manager Ian Foster, who has also named John Russell as vice-captain for the season ahead. Russell is struggling with an ankle injury and will miss at least the first four games of the new season, but Foster said he is happy with the squad he has put together ahead of next week’s kick-off at St. Pat’s.
