Ó Conaire replica statue to be unveiled next month

The long-awaited return of Pádraic Ó Conaire to Eyre Square is set to take place next month with the official unveiling of a replica statue of the acclaimed Irish writer.

The cast bronze statue, which has been hidden behind a timber box since its arrival last month, will be revealed to the public on November 23 – bringing to an end a saga which has seen several missed deadlines.

Former Mayor, Cllr Pádraig Conneely revealed that City Hall had finally settled the date for the occasion.

“82 years after the statue of Pádraic Ó Conaire was first unveiled in Eyre Square, a bronze replica statue will be unveiled in Eyre Square on November 23.

“It has taken 13 years to have the replica statue finally back in Eyre Square, where it belongs,” said Cllr Conneely.

The original statue was removed in 2004 to facilitate the upgrade of Eyre Square, having been in situ since 1935.
