An NUI Galway study of young carers in Ireland has found that children as young as nine are acting as carers in the home.

It’s estimated that three quarters of young carers in Ireland begin from the age of nine, with over a third being the primary carers.

The NUIG study, the first of its kind in the country, found that many of our young carers are helping out in ways from general housework to more intimate care, like dressing, toileting and bathing.
