Talks on increasing the NUI Galway student levy to offer free gym membership for students are taking place between the union and university officials.

The proposal, which would have to be voted on by students, suggests increasing the current 224 euro levy by 50 euro.

This in turn would remove the current 250 euro student charge for membership to the gym on the university grounds.

The student union has put forward the proposal and talks are now taking place with the relevant university authorities and the Kingfisher club.

NUIG student union President, Emmet Connolly says a referendum on the issue could take place next month.
