NUIG Student accommodation cost increases lower that other colleges
Galway Bay fm newsroom – While new students at some universitities around Ireland will be hit with price hikes for college accommodation of eight per cent this year the increase at NUI Galway is at the lower end of the scale.
The higher cost of accommodation from next month on some university campus residents is highlighted in a story in the Sunday Business Post today.
At UCD the accomodation price increase is eight per cent with NUI Maynooth the second highest at six per cent.
Outside of the Dublin region the increased prices for on-campus accommodation at NUI Galway is stated in the report to range from two to four per cent while at the University of Limerick prices are set to increase by two per cent.
A spokesperson for the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) says the increased accommodation costs are creating “an access to education issue” for many potential first year students.
The USI spokesperson added that the accommodation cost increases, coupled with the decrease in value of the student maintenance grant against inflation,
means that many students will be “priced out of college”.
