NUIG Mystics deliver again in chalking up latest victory
NUIG Mystics continue to blaze a trail in the South Conference of the Women’s Division 1, a 90-75 win on the road against LYIT Donegal on Sunday making it seven wins from eight for Paul O’Brien’s side.
It was the only success over the weekend for the Galway sides across the leagues, with both NUIG Maree and Moycullen slumping to losses in the Men’s Super League; and Titans suffering defeat in the Men’s Division 1.
MEN’S DIVISION 1
Titans 60
Sligo All Stars 85
A slow start to the game set the tone for Titans as they went down to Sligo All Stars in the Ballinfoile/Castlegar Neighbourhood Centre on Saturday evening.
A number of their squad had played in the 75-52 defeat to UCD Marian in Dublin the previous night in the quarter-finals of the Men’s U20 Cup, and they were dealt a blow before the game when Jackson Soper pulled up injured in the warm-up.
The visitors took full advantage of their weary hosts to open a 9-0 lead after just 150 seconds of play, forcing Titans into an early timeout, and the talk-through worked to an extent, but while Comhghall McCormack began to find his range, Sligo continued to dominate, especially through captain, Zach Powell.
Powell was lucky to stay in the game when he caught Joseph Coughlan flush on the chin with what appeared to be a deliberate elbow late in the second-quarter, but the officials failed to spot it, and tempers rose, with Eoin Coughlan also lucky not to have been penalised for racing onto the court to remonstrate with the officials.
Joseph Coughlan was soon hit with a technical for words with the officials to put the tin hat on a poor night for Titans’ captain, who hit just two points in the game, his frustration showing in a number of slaps aimed at his chair during and after the game.
