NUIG LIBRARY COULD DRAMATICALLY EXPAND ARCHIVE

The library at NUIGalway could get the option to extend its archive to include digital content if a new recommendation comes into law.

According to today’s Irish Times, the library is one of 8 ‘legal deposit’ libraries in the country.

These include the National Library and the libraries of seven universities including NUIG.

Legal deposit means that publishers and distributors must deposit at least one copy of every publication, free of charge in designated legal deposit libraries.

A report from the Copyright Review Committee is expected to recommend the extension of the copyright deposit include websites, ejournals and ebooks.

Billions of webpages, blogs and ebooks will be collected with books, magazines and newspapers, which have been stored for centuries.
