NUIG just lose out but GMIT suffer a hammering

Roscommon 1-17

NUI Galway 0-14

NUI Galway, who had already stunned Mayo in the opening round of the FBD League, were unable to follow up on that victory when they faced Roscommon in their second-round fixture in Ballyforan on Sunday.

Trailing 0-11 to 0-6 at the break, the College sorely missed the direction of Galway forward Damien Comer. The Annaghdown student sadly missed the fixture following the passing of his father John, who had been laid to rest the previous day. A minute’s silence was held in John’s honour at the game.

At any rate, Michael Daly and Owen Gallagher were in fine form for the students, who had the deficit back to just three points with time almost up.

However, the goal they required to snatch something from this fixture did not come their way – instead Roscommon’s Shane Killoran pounced in injury-time to nudge his side one step closer to appearing in their third consecutive FBD League final.

Certainly, the game did not lack for anything throughout and one of the most bizarre moments was when Roscommon goalkeeper Mark Miley punched the ball over his own crossbar as he took it across his own goalmouth.

Next up, NUIG face IT Sligo at the Centre of Excellence in Bekan tonight (7pm) while Roscommon and Mayo clash in their final group game in Kiltoom next Sunday.
