NUI Galway is joining a 5 million euro pan-european fight to drive the MRSA superbug out of hospitals across the world.

It’s been appointed project partner to a European team developing MRSA-resistant textiles such as hospital gowns and beddings which can kill bacteria and be self-sterilising.

A major element of the superbug problem arises from the use of conventional hospital gowns, curtains, beddings and pillow covers.

The research will be headed up by the University of Limerick and nine other European agencies.

NUIG researcher Dr Gerard Wall will spend the next three years helping the team develop nanotechnology to help hospitals in their fight against MRSA.
