NUIG discovers risk factor for mental illness

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Researchers at NUI Galway have discovered a new risk factor for mental illnesses such as schizophrenia.

Scientists have shown that changes in a little known gene, ULK4, were observed in people with schizophrenia, making it a risk factor.

The gene also plays an essential role in proper brain formation.

The research, led by NUI Galway and the University of Aberdeen, is published in the Journal of Cell Science.
