NUIG ACADEMIC SPEAKS AT OIREACHTAS COMMITTEE ON ABORTION ISSUE
Date Published: 09-Jan-2013
An NUI Galway legal academic and expert in stem cell research says the Government needs to be careful not to be overly restrictive with abortion legislation.
Ciara Staunton is speaking before the Oireachtas Committee on Health ahead of the coalition introducing legislation and regulations.
Today is the second day of hearings on the abortion issue, focusing on the legal aspects of Government proposals.
Among those to speak today include representatives of the Irish council of civil liberties as well as Professor William Binchy of Trinity College Dublin and retired Supreme Court Judge Catherine McGuinness.
Ciara Staunton says medical professionals have to be trusted for their clinical judgement that the threat of suicide is connected to the pregnancy.
