NUIG outlines future vision in five year plan
The construction of a landmark cultural and performance space, the development of a new library and the progression of a new innovation district in Nuns’ Island are among the plans NUI Galway has committed to prioritise over the next five years in a strategy to be launched this morning (Thursday).
The strategy, entitled ‘Shared Vision, Shaped by Values’ will be unveiled later today by President of the University, Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh, and is said to have been developed following extensive dialogue with the university community and the wider community.
Among plans for the University is the creation of a “landmark cultural and performance space, acknowledging our role as a national cultural institution” and the contribution of the University “to Galway as a city of culture”.
“Our university is at the heart of a distinctive city and region, renowned for its culture, creativity, technology and innovation. Drawing on these distinctive strengths will set us apart internationally,” it states.
A new library is also to be constricted, incorporating a ‘Learning Commons’ that encourages and supports new forms of learning and engagement.
A master plan for the regeneration of Nuns’ Island – co-funded by Galway City Council and NUIG – is already underway and this new strategy puts this at the top of its list of priorities.
“A new innovation district, incorporating a riverside campus on Nuns’ Island/Earls Island as the primary driver of the urban regeneration of Galway.”
