NUI Galway welcomes performance linked funding ahead of new targets
NUI Galway says performance linked funding from the taxpayer is to be welcomed.
It follows reports that third level institutions, including those in Galway, are facing cuts to their funding of up to 10 percent if they don’t meet new targets.
The Irish Independent reports that colleges and universities will be graded on items including student retention rates, inclusion of disadvantaged students, research and commercialisation.
The reform is aimed at enhancing the quality of the third level experience for students expecting their results on Wednesday.
A statement from NUI Galway says the move to performance linked funding from the taxpayer has been well signalled by the higher education authority and is to be welcomed.
It adds the Irish Universities operate in a very competitive environment both inside and outside Ireland and as such are aware of the need to sustain and improve their performance in the best interests of students, staff and the economy as a whole.
