NUI GALWAY PLANS REDEVELOPMENT OF FISH TANK SYSTEMS DESTROYED IN CARNA FIRE

It’s emerged that a number of extensive fish tank systems were damaged in this weekend’s fire at the marine research centre at Mweenish in Carna.

NUI Galway has confirmed the tanks contained seaweeds, shellfish and finfish and they’ll now make plans to re-develop them.

The stocks inside the tanks destroyed by fire on Saturday morning were being used in a variety of projects to develop value-added seafood produce.

The main academic, administrative and laboratory buildings were unaffected by the fire and work will continue as normal without any threat to jobs at the Research Centre.

Meanwhile Garda forensic experts from Millstreet Garda station are awaiting a final clearance of the site to make a final forensic examination.

However, they say at this stage in the investigation they’re satisfied no foul play was involved.
