NTA commits to funding cycle lane along Salthill Prom

From this week’s Galway City Tribune – The National Transport Authority (NTA) has committed to ‘fully funding’ the implementation of a temporary cycle lane along Salthill Prom.

This comes after doubts were cast over the authority’s financing of the project when just €80,000 was allocated “to assist in the development of proposals for a suitable walking and cycling route along the Promenade . . . which would be segregated from motorised traffic”.

This followed a Parliamentary Question from Galway West TD Éamon Ó Cuív (FF) to the Minister for Transport who in turn directed the NTA – which he said had responsibility for the project – to detail the funding proposals.

However, this week, Cllr Niall Murphy (Green), secured clarification from the NTA that Galway City Council would have to provide an initial design scheme for the temporary project in order to estimate costs, and that process was yet to be completed.

“When the preliminary design details are developed by the Council, they will then be in a position to submit a grant application form to the NTA. We can confirm that, subject to a safe and appropriate design being developed, we expect to be in a position to fully fund the implementation of this trial,” stated the NTA.

Meanwhile, Galway West TD and Junior Minister for Transport, Hildegarde Naughton (FG), confirmed that the NTA was to meet city officials yesterday (Thursday) to discuss their cycleway plans.

“While it is entirely appropriate for the executive to propose a design scheme for consultation, it should be noted that if the cycleway is to be funded directly by the State, as opposed to the Council itself, such designs must have the consent of the NTA, a State body under the remit of my Department.”
