Galway woman Nora Fahy from Rahoon is officially Ireland’s top granny – picking up the Grandparent of the Year award at a function in Dublin at the weekend.

She was presented with her prize at the SMA know-how Maternity & Infant Awards 2012 on Friday at the Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin.

The awards celebrate inspiring individuals who have touched the lives of those around them, and recognise the leading maternity products and services as voted for by the public.

Nora was nominated by her daughter Jennifer for her unyielding support in caring for Jennifer’s children during an extremely difficult time in their lives.

Over the past number of years, Jennifer has struggled with the loss of two unborn babies and extensive pelvic problems during the pregnancies of her other three children, requiring her to lean heavily on her mother for support.

Not only that, but during Jennifer’s troubled pregnancies, Nora single handedly took on the role of looking after the children full time while her daughter required extensive bed rest.

Jennifer feels that without her mother, she would not have the three happy, healthy children she has today, who all adore their nana.
