Galway Bay fm newsroom – There is no threat to services at the maternity unit in Portiuncula Hospital.
HSE management has issued the reassurance following a meeting held on Friday evening with maternity staff at the Ballinasloe hospital.
News of the meeting had sparked fears that the service may be in jeopardy after concerns were raised by Roscommon Deputy Denis Naughten.
However Ballinasloe election candidate Aidan Donohue says has decribed such claims as ‘malicious rumour’.
The HSE West has also refuted the claims and says the meeting was held as part of a review of the existing models of maternity services care being conducted across the West/North West Hospitals Group.
Dr Geraldine Gaffney, Clinical Director of the Group’s Women’s and Children’s Directorate met with maternity staff and was accompanied by Deirdre Foley Woods of The Health Partnership.
In a statement to Galway Bay fm news, the HSE West says staff were advised that no decision has been made about the reconfiguration of services.
They were also advised that there are no planned closures of maternity services.
Speaking on Galway Talks, Chief Operating Officer Tony Canavan says the maternity is not under threat of closure and speculation is unhelpful.
