There are no prosecutions pending for non payment of the household charge in the city or county.

Spokespersons for both local authorities say such legal action has not yet been served on non-compliant householders.

Although Galway has not yet recorded any pending prosecutions for non-payment of the levy, three people have appeared in court in Mayo over their failure to pay.

The Irish Times reports that they are the first people to be prosecuted in connection with the controversial tax.

Last month, Galway City had recorded the second highest rate of household tax compliance in the country, with seventy four percent paying the levy, that’s just over twenty thousand registrants.

The county had a rate of sixty four percent in October, with forty thousand households registered for the levy.

All local authorities must have a compliance rate of under sixty five percent rate of in order to avoid further cuts to local government funding as set down by Environment Minister, Phil Hogan.

They have until mid-November to achieve the desired compliance rate before a fresh review under which the next quarter allocations will be calculated.
