No pass for Students after letting Galway United play

GALWAY United secured their place in this year’s play-offs with a dominant display over a UCD side that made the cardinal error of allowing the Tribesmen to get their passing game going from an early stage.
In United’s previous league outing, Treaty United came to Eamonn Deacy Park and set out to frustrate the home side with a physical approach and a high press. Last Friday’s visitors were lacking the first option, and were unable to deal with the high tempo with which United approached the game.
It took a bit of time for the home side to break down the Students, but once they did, they were full value for a win that will leave them hoping for a repeat meeting with UCD in the play-offs next month.
One up at the break through Wilson Waweru, United drove home their superiority in the second-half with two cracking finishes form the edge of the box from Mikie Rowe and Shane Doherty, before Padraic Cunningham completed the rout with a hugely emotional goal.
The striker had linked up with the squad just before the game, having attended the funeral of his grandmother, Margaret Corbett, that morning; and after scoring, he wheeled away pointing to the heavens, dedicating his goal to his beloved Nanny.
Bouyed on by a good atmosphere – God, how we missed the presence of fans in the past 18 months – United started on the front foot, playing the kind of tidy passing football that has been missing from their performances in recent weeks. They pressed their visitors from the start, forcing the Students into a couple of early errors, but they were unable to capitalise on them.
