No friendly fire anticipated as Galway take on the Rebels
GALWAY hurling manager Shane O’Neill is expecting a full-bloodied contest against Cork in their final group of the National League at Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Sunday (1.45pm).
Fresh from seeing his charges overcoming Waterford by eight points in Sunday’s scoring blitz at Pearse Stadium, O’Neill is bracing his team for a stern examination from the Rebels.
“I don’t think it’s going to be very friendly down in Cork to be honest with you. They rested a lot of players against Limerick last night, so it looks like they will be trying to finish the league strong.”
With a place in the league final still on Galway’s radar, the Limerick native promised that his team wouldn’t be holding back either for a fixture which will see 200 supporters in attendance for the first time this year as Covid restrictions gradually relax.
Galway need to beat Cork and hope Tipperary draw or lose their final league outing away to Waterford. Both teams are on six points, but Liam Sheedy’s side won their head-to-head meeting which puts them in pole position.
Kilkenny have already advanced to the league final from Group B, but due to the truncated fixtures programme, the decider will be incorporated into the championship should the finalists’ paths cross later in the summer. Otherwise, the league title will be shared – hardly a satisfactory scenario.
Having lost their previous outing to Tipperary in Thurles, Galway got back on track with their come-from-behind win over Waterford. Seven points behind at one juncture, the home team displayed some ruthless finishing with the in-form Brian Concannon (two), Joe Canning and Adrian Tuohey ending their mini goal-scoring drought.
