Galway, Dublin, Shannon and Knock Airports will be closed until 6 o’clock tomorrow morning at the earliest.

A massive ash cloud from a volcanic eruption in Iceland has moved into Irish airspace.

All flights to and from Dublin are grounded as a result, causing major disruption at other airports including Galway.

The UK’s entire airspace has also been closed until further notice.

The next update from the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre is due before seven this evening – that will be followed by a further advisory from the Irish Aviation Authority.

Met Eireann says it could take days before the cloud disperses.

Management at Galway airport is advising people to check the airport website for updates on the flight situation.
