‘No basis’ for €20m estimate for Eyre Square

THE Galway City Manager has said there is “no basis at all” for claims that the final bill for the controversial Eyre Square Enhancement Scheme could come to €20 million.

However, Joe MacGrath refused to speculate on what the eventual cost of the project could be, but said the outcome would not have any financial impact on the day-to-day running of the Council.

Last week, Mayor of Galway Padraig Conneely claimed the costs for Eyre Square could hit €20 million after the Council lost a High Court bid to overturn the decision of an arbitration hearing – which arose after the original contractor on the site Samuel Kingston Construction Ltd was accused of abandoning the site.
