Bradley Bytes: Niamh ‘burned’ by political pettiness

Niamh Byrne is a political party strategist’s dream. She’s a woman. She’s an intelligent woman. And she’s a good-looking intelligent woman. What more could you ask for? She’s young, too. Perfect. Stick her head up on a poster and she’ll be elected all day, every day.

Fine Gael should be ashamed of itself then, that the city schoolteacher has been so put off by politics, that she’s decided not to run again in May’s local elections.

As well as finding it difficult to juggle her day job at St Mary’s College with the demands of politics, she found the antics of (mostly) male one-upmanship at County Council meetings tedious.

“There were times when I felt that I was too old for the job given the amount of juvenile behaviour that takes place in the Council chamber,” she said.

Another good woman lost to politics. Gender quotas won’t solve that conundrum.

Our Nuala is back!

One woman who hasn’t been scared away by politics, is Nuala Nolan, aka Our Nuala . . . For more Bradley Bytes, see this week’s Galway City Tribune
