Newcastle the most expensive place in Galway to rent
Newcastle continues to be the most expensive location in Galway City for private rented accommodation, according to new Government figures.
Students and employees at NUI Galway and University Hospital Galway are continuing to drive up rents in the area.
At the end of last year, private renters were paying an average of €1,115 for a property in Newcastle – that’s up just under 5% on the €1,064 monthly average a year earlier.
The latest statistics from the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) and Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) show that the average rent in the city stood at €1,018 – up around 10% from the €928 per month at the end of 2015.
An analysis of the figures by the Galway City Tribune shows the next most expensive location in which to rent was Bohermore at almost €1,095 per month – up 16.5% from €940 a year earlier.
The cheapest locations at the city limits was Oranmore at €855 per month, while inside the city the cheapest were Doughiska at an average of €858 per month and Rahoon at €899 per month.
There were also year-on-year drops in average rents recorded in Woodquay (-3%) and Rahoon (-1.6%).
Rent controls were introduced in Galway’s three Local Electoral Areas – City West, City Central and City East – by Housing Minister Simon Coveney last January.
