New Zealander Nadia is making waves and on her way
July might have just arrived, but it’s no harm putting Thursday, August 10, into your diary, because that’s the evening Nadia Reid comes to Róisín Dubh.
Hailing from New Zealand, Nadia released the excellent Preservation this year, and is a name to watch out for. This is songwriting with a richness to it, and it’s easy to hear why the music press has heaped praise on her new release.
Nadia Reid’s latest single Richard is a good place to start – it’s a song with edge. She has a voice that draws you in, and a keen ear for a poetic lyric, but these things can get lost if the production on a track isn’t up to scratch. The dissonant guitars and subtle drumming work because they’re minimal, and don’t get in the way of a brilliant song.
Nadia released her debut album in 2014. Listen to Formation, Look for The Signs might be a long title, but it signalled the arrival of a major talent. Some are Lucky is a tune that’s worth seeking out, as is Call the Days.
Some artists seem keen to make music that bursts from the speakers, but this woman makes music that’s much more subtle. The power in Nadia Reid’s songs soon reveals itself, however – and she’s catching ears beyond her home country.
Her Galway gig is the opening night of a tour that will see her play over 20 dates across the UK, Scandinavia and Europe.
Highly recommended. Tickets €12.50/€10 members.
