Mark Geary, a singer-songwriter of genuine class, returns to Galway next month and will play the Róisín Dubh on Friday, September 13.

Mark, who was born in Dublin, emigrated to New York City at the age of 19, where he soon became part of a thriving music scene centred around the East Village and the legendary Sin-é Cafe.

Supporting himself by working as a bartender, Mark devoted his free time to developing his songwriting skills, cutting his teeth playing open-mics around the city. Inspired by performers including The Beatles, Nick Drake, Radiohead and Van Morrison, he soon attracted the attention of both audiences and fellow artists, and featured on line-ups with the likes of Joe Strummer, Elvis Costello and the late Jeff Buckley.

Mark’s first album, 33 1/3 Grand Street was released in 2002 and was followed by Ghosts, which earned critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic, while 2008′s Opium continued to showcase his talents.

Mark’s fourth studio album, the 2011 Songs about Love, Songs about Leaving was recorded in New York City with guest performances from Glen Hansard and Jenna Nichols.

He has also composed scores for several films, including 2005’s Loggerheads, 2006’s Steel City, and 2010′s Sons of Perdition, while his songs have been featured on various television shows including One Tree Hill and Bones.

Mark is continuing to tour while working on his next record.

Doors for his Galway show are at 9pm and tickets are €10.
