New Toyota Hilux boasts range of improvements to an already quality model
By Gerry Murphy
When pictures of war zones flash up on our television screens, far too often these days, the prevalent vehicle that appears seems to be the Toyota Hilux. It is a testament to its strength and robustness that it is the vehicle of choice for the various factions that are threatening, and attempting to keep peace, in our world.
Since it was launched in Ireland, more than 5,000 Hilux have been sold with many of them still on Irish roads today. The current generation was launched in 2005 and enjoyed a refresh in 2011. Since 2011, Hilux has enjoyed a number one best-selling performance in its segment every year. That number one performance continues in 2016, with an exceptional 27% segment share. A new Hilux has arrived in Irish showrooms in time for 162 registrations.
Toyota has changed the running gear in the Hilux and the driving performance is much improved courtesy of a new 2.4 D-4D engine, replacing the 3.0-litre version in previous models.
Despite this, the new torque figure is 16.5% higher at 400Nm at a lower engine speed than before, giving greater flexibility. Downsizing, with greater driveability and greater efficiency, has been achieved, with new Hilux combined fuel consumption improving from 7.7L to 7.0L. On my test vehicle this week I achieved 8.0L/100km, a figure that looks as good on paper as it feels on the pocket.
It is achieved because the new six speed gearbox helps deliver a new 23% taller ratio in top gear. 148bhp is generated at 3,400rpm. You can also choose a six speed Automatic Transmission that is also new. You also get two driving modes: ECO and POWER Mode.
ECO mode reduces fuel consumption by modifying accelerator pedal response as well as heating/cooling performance. It works really well for urban driving and short distances. POWER Mode provides a stronger acceleration response, ensuring more agile driving on rough ground, fields and on winding roads.
Inside, there are a number on modern changes that make living with the Hilux all the more comfortable. The seat hip point is 10mm higher than before for better visibility and now comes with telescopic steering adjustment to ensure the optimum driving position & maximum comfort. The introduction of a full 220v plug type charge point gives the benefit of being able to charge a laptop on the go.
Noise, vibration and harshness are also much better than before because of attention to dash silencing, improved engine noise, better engine compartment sound insulation, thicker carpet for the cabin, wider weather-strips for the door openings as well as foam insulation in the roof area.
The Toyota Touch multimedia platform, one of the best systems in the market, comes with a larger 7” screen and a 4.2” Colour TFT information screen within the dash display.
