New show goes to the heart of being on the oustisde

Interloper, an unusual dance show in which two dancers, an actress and a drummer explore the notion of identity and belonging, comes to the Town Hall Theatre on Wednesday, February 5.
“It’s a dance piece about being part of a group of people but still feeling like an interloper,” says Dublin-born Liz Roche, whose Liz Roche Dance Company is performing the piece.

“It’s about the doubts that come up when you meet new people, the subtle adjustments you make and the way you adapt,” explains Liz, who choreographed the show and dances in it.  “It’s not about letting other people decide how we behave,” she adds, “but the changes we make instinctively.”
Interloper, from one of Ireland’s foremost dance companies, incorporates dance, text, lighting and sound to examine the bonds people make and break on a daily basis, while trying to balance their own desires with those of people around them.
“Everything keeps moving,” says Liz. “At first, someone new coming into people’s company might be a big intrusion – then you adapt and then something else new happens and you absorb that, maybe more quickly.
This show, which “is a little under an hour long and moves quite quickly”, came about when Liz, who now focuses mostly on choreography after years as a dancer, decided to return to performing.
However, rather than doing a solo piece, she opted to work with people from different backgrounds.
