The provision of a new school building for Presentation College Athenry has been described as a real opportunity for the local economy.

Junior Minister and past pupil Ciaran Cannon today announced plans for the new school which will be located on a 20 acre site adjacent to the Raheen Woods hotel.

The funding will come from the Government’s Infrastructure and Capital Investment Framework which includes an allocation for education of 2.2 billion over the five years.

The project will now enter the ‘design process stage’ whereby a team of architects and engineers will design the school building.

It’s the second major announcement for education in Athenry in recent months.

The new second level Gaelscoil na hAchreidh will be housed in these buildings once the VEC move out to the new site in the next 3 to 4 years.

Hundreds of construction jobs are expected to come on stream with the new buildings project.

Speaking at the announcement at Presentation College this afternoon, Junior Minister Cannon says there is a ‘real need’ for new schools in Athenry
