NEW REPORT SAYS GALWAY RURAL AND ISLAND COMMUNITIES FIGHTING FOR SURVIVAL

A new report has found evidence that rural and island communities in Galway are fighting for survival.

“Awakening the West” is the first report identifying the social and economic needs of the West of Ireland in decades.

It’s author, Sinn Fein Senator Pearse Doherty, has found that Government policy is continuing to prioritise the east coast.

Among it’s recommendations is that investment in tourism is critical, with potential for outdoor recreation in counties such as Galway.

Senator Doherty will officially launch the report in Galway next Tuesday (6/1/09) and will present his findings to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.
