New release from Galway outfit is just the business!

With the support of Galway’s fledgling, independent label Umbrella Records, indie-folk four-piece Derek Ellard & The Future Business Model have enjoyed a productive nine months. The group has mustered five singles since the release of Equal to or Greater Than in July of last year and their waxy, atmospheric catalogue is bolstered by Derek and his colleagues’ tireless work behind the scenes.

The evolving sound of the band has been more than mirrored in the development of the label and their latest project is proof of that.

Released on March 5, The Lake is the fifth single from Derek Ellard & The Future Business Model. Waltzing and jagged, it is perhaps best described by the first line of its pre-chorus – ‘I can’t dance/ But will you sway with me?’.

The Future Business Model is made up of Joseph Padfield (Guitar/Keys/Vocals), Kyle Dee (Bass/Vocals) and Dylan Murphy (Drums), each of whom have persevered impressively with their craft over lockdown.

Derek and Joe’s abilities in sound production have been particularly crucial in the group amassing a stream of releases.

“We realised that if we worked together, it’d be possible to get a record done,” Derek recalls.

“Luckily we had a couple of sessions done before the pandemic so we had drum tracks for different songs. When it started, we decided to finish them off and when we started doing that, we were working closely together.

“The label started to get a bit more organised and we were helping each other out with social media. Necessity is the mother of invention – isn’t that what they say?”
