NEW REHABILITATION UNIT TO BE BUILT IN MERLIN PARK

The first rehabilitation unit in the West for the treatment of patients with severe brain injuries is be built on the grounds of Merlin Park hospital.

City planners have granted permission for the development which will consist of a 45 bed unit, therapy rooms and car parking.

The unit will provide specialist rehabilation for conditions such as strokes and spinal injuries.

It’s to be located on a vacant site in Merlin Park between the existing geriatric unit and respiratory centre.

The Merlin Park unit will also contain 15 beds designated for victims under 65 who are suffering from acquired brain injuries.

This will mean patients in the West with severe brain injuries will no longer have to travel to Dun Laoighre in Dublin for treatment
