Unusually large water bills in the county could become a thing of the past, now that the County Council and its agent, Celtic Anglican in Athenry have come up with a new payment regime.

Farmers and businesses in the county have received bills for as much as 10 thousand euro a year.

However, the Council now says that if the water user fixes leaks, and where the council is convinced that the higher water usage was not the norm, the bill will be reduced to 20 percent.

Under the new regime, taps must be checked for leaks, ball cocks must be working properly and broken or bruised pipes must be replaced immediately.

Galway East T.D, Paul Connaughton, says this will be a great relief to consumers who faced large water bills.
