New president for NUIG

AN NUI Galway graduate will take over at the helm of the university next month, following an extensive international and national search for the college’s twelfth President.
Professor Jim Browne, who is NUI Galway’s current Registrar and Deputy President, will take over as President next month, when outgoing President Dr Iognáid Ó Muircheartaigh steps down from the post he’s held since 2000.
The 55-year-old former Dean of Engineering — who also graduated with a degree in engineering from NUI Galway — has published more than 200 academic papers and 15 books; and was appointed President following an extensive national and international search, the college said in a statement.
“Professor Browne is a distinguished academic with very wide international contacts and experience of other Universities in Europe, the US, Asia and Latin America,” Dr. Noel Dorr, Chairman of the Selection Board, said.
